"Data Centers: Technical Site Selection for Local Communities"
Wednesday, May 20, 2026
12:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. CT

As demand for large-scale data centers continues to expand, rural regions are increasingly considered for siting due to land availability, infrastructure capacity, and regional power resources. This NREDA webinar examines the technical drivers behind data center site selection, with a focus on how these facilities are evaluated and planned within Minnesota landscapes. Common misconceptions—particularly related to land use intensity, water demand, and infrastructure impacts—are addressed through a practical, engineering based lens.

The session, presented by Trish Sieh, will outline core siting criteria, including electrical supply and redundancy, water sourcing and discharge considerations, transportation access, environmental constraints, and permitting frameworks. Attendees will gain insight into how data centers differ from traditional industrial developments, where technical risks most often arise, and how early coordination during site selection and due diligence can reduce uncertainty and streamline project development. The presentation is intended to support informed technical discussions among site selectors, planners, and stakeholders involved in evaluating large scale development opportunities.

Trish Sieh, PE is a professional civil engineer and shareholder at Kimley-Horn. With nearly 20 years in the land development industry, she specializes in the planning, entitlement, and delivery of large scale, technically complex development projects, with a strong focus on data centers and power intensive infrastructure.
